… in which we turn my mom’s kitchen, into a test kitchen.

Come the end of September my parent’s are throwing my grandma a birthday party (sssshhhh, she doesn’t know it!)… more on that later.  For now, my mom and I are trying to perfect the menu for the party.  From a food standpoint we’re going to have a “candy bar” where we have a pink theme happening… and then we are making appetizers!

Which, I am a fan of – if I could make a meal of appetizers, I totally would.  Which, coincidentally, we did last night!

The two recipes that we tried out last night were Bacon Wrapped Little Smokies and Homemade Pizza rolls – both a la Pinterest.  Both were also delicious; my mom preferred the Bacon Wrapped Smokies and I preferred the Pizza Rolls, but I think both will make it to the party, pending a few adjustments.

Below are the recipes, with the adjustments we’re thinking we’ll make:


Bacon Wrapped Little Smokies

What to Gather:

1 lb of bacon

1 package of little smokies

1 stick of butter

1 1/4 cups brown sugar

Ingredients for Bacon Wrapped Smokies

What to Do:

Cut the raw bacon into halves

Wrap a half bacon strip around each little smokie and place in an ungreased baking dish

Melt 1 cup of brown sugar and the stick of butter on the stove until smooth, then pour over the smokies.

Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of brown sugar over the dish and bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes, or until the bacon starts to look done (or, not raw).  Then turn the oven up to 400 and bake for an additional 5 minutes until bubbly.

Spear the bacon wrapped smokies with toothpicks and place on a papertowel lined plate to drain a little.

Bacon! How very American… 😉

Enjoy! :]  While these are obviously not very good for you… they blend the salty and sweet just right.  Originally, the recipe called that we cut the bacon into thirds, and that we start with 2 cups of brown sugar.  However, the bacon, when cut like that, wasn’t long enough to stay around the smokie, even with the help of the toothpick.  Also the amount of brown sugar was just A LOT; hence our adjustments.


Now… onto the Pizza Rolls!

Homemade Pizza Rolls

What to Gather:

3 cans of biscuits

1 block of cheese

1 package of sliced pepperoni

1 egg

Parmesan Cheese

Italian Seasoning

Garlic Powder

Pizza Sauce


What to Do:

Cut the cheese into at least 28 squares

Build the pizza rolls by flattening out a biscuit, and laying a pepperoni slice, a cube of cheese and another pepperoni slice in the center.  Fold the edges into itself so it forms a cute little pod.

Grease a baking dish and place the little pods, folds down in the baking dish.  Beat the egg and brush over the top of the pizza rolls.  Sprinkle with Parmesan, Italian Seasoning and Garlic Powder.

Bake at 425 for 18-20 minutes.  Use the pizza sauce as your dipping sauce (optional I spose).

These were so good… and pretty easy to make too!  They took a little bit of time as you flattened and folded, but the overall effort was very worth it.
